Less than two weeks before the Battle of the Bulge, General Patton requested/ordered Third U.S. Army Chaplain James H. O’Neill to write a prayer for good weather and to give a copy to each member of the Third Army. The intention of the prayer to God was to give the the Third Army fighting forces a much needed break from inclement weather in order to fight more efficiently and with less effort to defeat the Germans.
Chaplain O’Neill felt some reservation in asking God for help in killing other human beings. Patton did not have time to rationalize his faith in the all mighty and his response was direct saying, “Chaplain, are you teaching me theology or are you the Chaplain of the Third Army? I want a prayer.”
Patton got his prayer and each member of the Third Army, which was approximately 250,000 at the time was issued a small prayer card which included the General’s Christmas message on the 22nd of December, 1944. By this time, the Battle of the Bulge was already underway. The next day, the weather cleared and remained perfect for about six days while the Third Army pushed North to relieve the 101st Airborne at Bastogne.
Prayer works and there is a Prayer Army in this country and around the world. Often referred to as The Silent Majority. These are good people who love God and country. Unfortunately many have misinterpreted the passage that the meek shall inherent the earth. Understand that to be meek is to become servient to our Creator before bowing to any man. Through the meekness of submitting to God we can manifest the salvation of this country that was once referred to as a country touched by the hand of God.
Evil minded men understand this and work tirelessly to corrupt the minds of our children and remove God from their lives. We must band together in prayer to regain an eroding favor with our creator and continue this experiment we call the United States of America. What Ronald Reagan once referred to as “The shining city upon a hill” Many good people pray daily and throughout the day. What we need is for good people to consciously pray for the United States of America.
by Msgr. James H. O’Neill(From the Review of the News 6 October 1971) Many conflicting and some untrue stories have been printed about General George S. Patton and the Third Army Prayer. Some have had the tinge of blasphemy and disrespect for the Deity. Even in “War As I Knew It” by General Patton, the…
Thank you all mighty God for blessing me to be in this great nation. Please save us from the enemies who would have You forsake us by forsaking You. Let it be so – Amen
God, evil forces work to remove you from every aspect of our great nation and especially from our front line earthly defense, our military. – Bless our forces. Thank you God – Amen
God forgive the silent majority for allowing evil to be louder than the voice for good in this country. Speak to the hearts of good people to sound off. Let it be so – Amen
