Not too many people know the history of General George S. Patton’s prayer for much needed better weather in order to more efficiently kill the Germans in the winter of 1944
Less than two weeks before the Battle of the Bulge, General Patton requested/ordered U.S. Army Chaplain James H. O’Neill to write a prayer for good weather and to give a copy to each member of the Third Army. The intention of the prayer to God was to give the the Third Army fighting forces a much needed break from the rainy weather in order to fight more efficiently and with less effort to defeat the Germans.
Chaplain O’Neill felt some reservation in asking God for help in killing other human beings. Patton did not have time to rationalize his faith in the all mighty and his response was direct saying, “Chaplain, are you teaching me theology or are you the Chaplain of the Third Army? I want a prayer.”
